In Nazi-occupied Paris, Pablo Picasso is brought before Miss Fischer, a German cultural officer with a seemingly simple request: authenticate three paintings said to be his.

But nothing about the encounter is simple.

As questions turn into accusations and certainty gives way to manipulation, artist and interrogator begin testing each other’s motives, loyalties, and limits.

Jeffrey Hatcher’s A Picasso is a sharp, suspenseful two-character drama about art, power, censorship, identity, and the price of survival.

About the Play

Paris, 1941.

Pablo Picasso has been summoned to a basement office by Miss Fischer, a representative of the German Ministry of Culture.

The Nazis have confiscated three works believed to be Picasso originals. Before the paintings are included in an exhibition of so-called “degenerate art,” Miss Fischer needs Picasso to confirm their authenticity.

What begins as an interrogation quickly becomes something far more complicated.

Picasso challenges her authority. Miss Fischer questions his loyalties. Both conceal information. Both manipulate the truth. And as the balance of power shifts between them, the conversation becomes a dangerous battle of intelligence, ego, politics, and survival.

Inspired by real historical events, A Picasso imagines a confrontation between one of the twentieth century’s most famous artists and the machinery of a regime determined to control what art is allowed to exist.

Intimate, tense, witty, and unexpectedly funny, the play asks a provocative question:

Can art ever truly be controlled?
